What Are Victaulic™ Grooved Fittings?

From mining to food production, Victaulic® grooved fittings and other fittings in that style are an essential part of many commercial and industrial operations. Used to ensure watertight joints between pipes of similar or differing materials and used in flow control and fire protection systems, these couplings can be either flexible or rigid and require no welding. Victaulic® is a brand name for this type of grooved fitting, but they are also made by other manufacturers.

Grooved Vic™ style fittings are a safe, durable alternative to other pipe coupling solutions, such as welding, but they also generally have a higher upfront cost, making them an investment worth protecting.

Do Grooved Vic™ Style Fittings Need to be Insulated?

It depends on the application, but generally speaking, if the pipeline needs to be insulated, the grooved fittings need to be as well. Insulation ensures the pipeline’s thermal stability while also protecting the pipeline from the stress of external temperature fluctuations. Insulation plays a critical role in protecting the system and its contents, but just like the rest of the pipeline, fittings and couplings are subject to the ravages of CUI.

Corrosion under insulation (CUI) can eat away at a fitting’s integrity and cause damage leading to failure. Solutions, including wrapped fiberglass, calcium silicate, and rockwool offer insulation protection but are extremely vulnerable to moisture. This means that when used in an outdoor application or any environment where humidity is high, spills can occur, or condensation exists, these types of insulation can take on enough moisture to damage the fittings (and also negate the insulative benefits).

Additionally, these types of insulation are difficult to manage when it comes to removal and re-inspection. When fittings need to be inspected, removing the insulation can damage it to the point of needing to be replaced. Further, adequately protecting grooved Vic™ style fittings can also be problematic because of the fittings’ protrusive shapes that are difficult to cover efficiently with standard insulation options.

All of these factors contribute to a higher risk of pipeline and insulation deterioration, and higher long-term cost over time than may be originally budgeted for when choosing “lower cost” insulation options.
