Project Details
Peoples Gas operates an underground natural gas storage facility in Champaign, Illinois. A few years ago, they moved the pipeline that services the underground storage tanks above ground in order to improve serviceability of mechanical components including valves, flanges and other parts that need regular maintenance. The move resulted in major issues with freezing pipes and condensate drop out when outside temperatures fall, and they needed a new insulation solution that could withstand exposure to the harsh above ground environmental conditions. The company came to Dragon Jacket after trying multiple insulation types coupled with heat trace with little to no success in solving the problem.
Dragon Jacket provided insulation for the system’s above-ground ten-inch pipe and its componentry, completing the project on time and within budget in just forty-man hours. Dragon Jacket’s durability in extreme operational conditions is expected to reduce costs related to frequent insulation replacement over the next decade. In addition, Dragon Jacket’s fully encapsulated polyurea coating and consistent R-value that does not degrade over time will provide a net reduction in maintenance hours related to the mitigation of freezes and condensate drop out.
“Because of its durability and ability to protect heat trace elements, Dragon Jacket excels in the type of extreme outdoor environments present at the Peoples Gas facility. It’s an ideal insulation option for above-ground pipeline exposed to freezing temperatures.” -Shawn Dunbarr, Dragon Jacket Engineer
